Heavyweight T-Shirts: Choose heavyweight tees if you want a long lasting, hard working tee that will keep it shape after endless trips to the laundry. I've chosen Fruit of the Looms 205gsm heavyweight tee (Men), Gildan Heavy Cotton 185gsm (Women) for this category. This garment is made from longer strands of cotton than lighter tees. The downside is that they feel a little harder on the skin but they can take a bashing and will look good and remain wearable for longer. The digital print ink used on these will last as long as the tee if you air dry the tee rather that in a tumble drier. Do not tumble dry printed tees. Do not place hot iron directly on the print, best to iron inside out!
Top Tip: to stop the armpits going hard from deodorants use a brand that is low in aluminium. Anti-perspirants tend to be very high in gunky aluminum chlorides which is the stuff that messes up your t-shirts armpits.
Lightweight T-Shirts: Gildan Ringspun, SoftStyle T-Shirt 165gsm 9men), 150gsm (Women. Lighter and cooler in summer and softer on the skin than the heavyweight option. Inevitably as these tees have a lower density cotton they will not be as hard wearing as heavyweight.
Performance Garments: Choose this category for motorcycle touring, hiking, sports and southern climates where sweating into cotton is less than ideal. For this category I've chosen AWD's 140gsm Cool T-shirt (Men&Women). Made with AWDis own Neoteric textured fabric with inherent wickability and the UPF 30 UV protection mean that it's incredibly comfortable and fast drying. Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) certified production. 100% polyester garments like these are far lighter and easier to live with than cotton tees on motorcycle tours.
